Mattooo
‘Farm to Fridge’
Mattooo was created through a cross
curricular, cross year group collaboration. The concept communicates the process
of dairy production from ‘Farm to Fridge’. The design on Mattooo’s side
communicates the beginning of the dairy process from the farm. The dominant blue
Aboriginal dot painting design is an interpretation of the topographical map of
the dairy regions of NSW. The cool blue colour scheme represents the coastal
area where our school is located and symbolises our strong links to our
community. The design on the base represents the soil strata and grass critical
to the dairy process and its sustainability as an industry. It has also been
painted in two different Aboriginal painting techniques.
The opposite side symbolises a fridge,
the end point for most dairy products. The base is designed to resemble a
kitchen floor and provides a contrast to the rural side of Mattooo. The brand on Mattooo’s rump is a stylised
logo based on the school logo, designed by a year 8 student. The disco hooves
are inspired by the artists Gaudi and our entry in last year’s Archibull Prize.
Mattooo is designed to open,
revealing a continuation of the ‘Farm to Fridge’ theme.
Inside the rural half of Mattooo is an abstract depiction of a cow’s digestive
system presented in contemporary Aboriginal and Islander patterning. These
patterns also communicate the dairy products journey from the land to the city
and symbolises our connection to the land where dairying occurs.
The opposite side of Mattooo is a
white screen onto which student animations are projected from a mini projector
installed in his head.
Under both halves is a conveyer
belt that represents the industrial packaging side of the dairy industry,
carrying painted milk cartons. The style and colour of the cartons were inspired
by the pop art movement and communicate the theme ‘Extraordinary Dairy’
